The Rheumatology Research Group (RRG) at the ÀÙË¿ÊÓƵ and the Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases uses anonymised databases from primary and secondary care with associated biobanks focussing on rheumatic disease for numerous research projects. The group has made significant contributions to the scientific literature with meaningful clinical impact using a variety of local, national and international databases over the last 30 years. The combined data is a valuable resource for the academic development and research needs of doctoral students, clinical fellows and other early career researchers. As data management including cleaning, curating, merging and analysing data becomes ever more complex we are seeking a research associate to support our wide ranging research group.

You will join a vibrant and productive research team, within which your role will be to coordinate and facilitate the team’s access to research databases including the Clinical Practice Research Datalink (comprising anonymised medical records from primary care), the rheumatology biobanks at the Royal United Hospitals and related lab/clinical databases at the ÀÙË¿ÊÓƵ. You will have expertise in data management and programming to supply data to the project teams for statistical analysis and contribute to publishing results in high-quality peer-reviewed academic literature. There may be the opportunity to take ownership of certain projects depending on your interest and expertise ( e.g. statistical modelling, bioinformatics, database design).

About you

• You will hold a PhD in a relevant subject area or professional experience in relevant discipline equivalent to that of a PhD - please see the person specification in the job description for more information.
• Have experience of working with large databases requiring the skills stipulated in the person specification
• Hold excellent communication skills and enjoy working within a team environment.

This is a part time position (0.4 FTE / 14.60 hours per week), offered on a fixed term contract for 3 years.

This will involve teaching small groups, lecturing, and delivering support on undergraduate/postgraduate courses as well as administrative, assessment and exam duties as required. This post will support learning and teaching in the area of conservation and evolutionary biology. 

This is a full-time, fixed-term contract for 12 months 

This job purpose can be summarised as follows: 

• To plan and deliver taught programmes of education and support student learning at undergraduate and postgraduate level (as appropriate). This will include preparation of teaching material, lectures, tutorials, laboratory classes assessment and marking of coursework. 
• To play a role in developing the teaching culture and student experience of the University. 
• To provide teaching-related management and administrative duties. 

Whilst it is expected that teaching will be informed by research/professional expertise, there is no research component to this role.

About the department 

The Department of Life Sciences at the ÀÙË¿ÊÓƵ was recently formed through the merger of the departments of Biology & Biochemistry and Pharmacy & Pharmacology. It has over 90 academic staff across a broad range of disciplines including, biochemistry, cell & developmental biology, evolution, genetics, immunology microbiology, pharmacology, pharmaceutical pharmacy and structural biology. The vast majority of research within the merged departments was rated as 4* or 3* in the last (REF2021) assessment.
