We are seeking a proactive and flexible individual to provide administrative support across two distinct teams; within the (IMI), and within the (SAMBa).

The role holder will have the unique opportunity to work in two friendly and supportive teams within a Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT), as well as a university institute.

About you 

  • You will be comfortable communicating with students, staff and external partners.
  • Proven ability to apply practical knowledge and sound judgement to work tasks and decisions.
  • You will possess excellent organisation skills with the ability to multi-task and prioritise your workload.
  • You will be proactive and able to work autonomously using use your initiative.
  • Your will have a flexible approach with a willingness to learn new skills.

You will have significant experience of working in a busy office environment, where excellent communication skills are essential.

You will be an experienced user of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc) and will be willing to acquire further IT skills as needed. You will be organised and flexible, and will have experience of working as part of a successful team.

Experience within the HE sector and knowledge of University specific software (e.g. Agresso, Food Direct, Clarity, etc) will be an added advantage. However, an interest and willingness to learn more about university institutions and CDTs, and become part of our teams, are equally important.

Further information

This is a fixed term, full-time role until at least June 2029. We offer a hybrid working arrangement with the option of working from home for part of the week.

This role is part of the Mathematical Innovation Research Associate (MIRA) team - an exciting, dynamic group central to the Institute for Mathematical Innovation (IMI). MIRAs are encouraged to work independently, think creatively and proactively contribute to the development of new research ideas and funding proposals. In addition, MIRAs lead and contribute to collaborative research projects involving both academic and industry partners.

At the heart of IMI’s mission, Mathematical Innovation Research Associates play a key role in translating cutting-edge mathematics, especially modelling and data-driven approaches, into real-world impact.

About you

We are seeking a candidate with strong expertise in interdisciplinary mathematical modelling, inverse problems, finite element methods (especially in complex and applied settings), machine learning techniques in scientific and industrial applications & experience collaborating with the Met Office or similar large-scale environmental institutions.

You will be working as part of the interdisciplinary academic teams to:

  • Provide mathematical expertise to a variety of long-term and short-term projects comprising diverse partnerships;
  • Work at the interface and be a liaison between academics in the Dept. Mathematical Sciences and other partners in academia and industry;
  • Learn about and implement new mathematical skills for interdisciplinary projects;
  • Cultivate your own mathematical identity with a broad base of expertise;
  • Demonstrate leadership through the development of novel data-centric mathematical modelling within other disciplines;
  • Engage in collaborative grant capture and impact acceleration.

Additional Information

As a member of Research Staff at the ÀÙË¿ÊÓÆµ, you will be encouraged to take up a minimum of 10 days professional development pro rata per year

The ideal candidate will hold a PhD in a relevant field however, a lower grade offer may be made (Grade 6) with comparable reduction in responsibilities and amendment in job title to Research Assistant, if a suitable applicant cannot be found to fill the Grade 7 position. Applicants will need to be within six months of their course completion date and will be promoted to Research Associate once their PhD has been awarded. 

This vacancy will be offered on a two-year, 1.0FTE fixed-term basis.
