About the role

As our subject matter expert on Fire Safety, you'll be responsible for: 

  • Acting as the main contact for all fire safety matters, providing advice and guidance, and acting as the University's appointed competent fire safety person.
  • Developing and implementing the University's Fire Safety Management System and driving fire safety improvements to foster a proactive fire safety culture.
  • Carrying out Fire Risk Assessments and supporting duty holders to address any areas of concern.
  • Supporting and advising departments on fire safety matters in new building projects and refurbishments.
  • Conducting fire safety audits to monitor practice and performance, identifying areas for improvement.
  • Training: Developing, implementing, and delivering fire safety training.

Based within the University's Safety, Health and Employee Wellbeing Service, you’ll join a specialist team providing support, advice and guidance across the University.

The role is predominantly based on the University's Claverton Down campus, although there will be some scope for hybrid working (normally up to 2 days per week off-campus subject to role commitments). We are open to a job share arrangement for this role. Please state your interest within your application.

About you

We’re looking for significant experience of advising on fire safety within complex buildings, across large organisations and a diverse range of activities.

Our ideal candidate will have:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of UK fire safety legislation and requirements, and health and safety legislation especially in respect of fire safety management.
  • Excellent written and verbal skills whilst working with, providing advice to, training, and promoting excellence in fire safety to staff members at all levels.
  • A proactive approach to help foster a positive safety culture, especially among those managing estates-based health and safety hazards.
  • The ability to empower others to improve performance and ensure compliance to relevant health and safety standards.
  • Experience of collaborating closely with external regulatory authorities for Fire Safety. 

You will also need to have:

  • A relevant fire safety qualification at European Qualification Framework Level 5 or equivalent (such as Level 4 Fire Safety Diploma).
  • Demonstrable commitment to continuing professional development.

We’re seeking a credible and confident individual to drive positive staff health and wellbeing at the ÀÙË¿ÊÓÆµ. We are currently one of only 15 Universities to have been awarded the , which recognises our whole university approach to mental health and wellbeing. You will build on these significant steps by leading on the staff facing elements of our "Be Well at Bath" initiative and acting as our Subject Matter Expert on staff wellbeing.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Engaging and networking with staff, leaders, managers and experts across the university.
  • Representing staff wellbeing in strategic meetings such as the Be Well Steering Group, Departmental Wellbeing Action Planning and Suicide Prevention Working Group to proactively develop actions and initiatives that enhance staff wellbeing.
  • Developing and supporting the implementation of evidence-based wellbeing interventions for staff and leading on projects that enhance a healthy culture.
  • Leading the communication plan for staff wellbeing; developing and updating intranet pages, writing blogs and articles and agreeing a wellbeing calendar of events.
  • Leading a network of volunteer Staff Wellbeing Champions, supporting and cultivating this community of practice
  • Providing training and other interventions, or sourcing these from external providers, to embed health and wellbeing approaches across the organisation.

You’ll be based in the University's Safety, Health and Employee Wellbeing Service which provides institution-wide professional guidance and support on general and specific health and wellbeing matters. This is not a counselling or mental health practitioner role, though on occasions you will work with individuals to signpost suitable support.

This is a hybrid role with an expectation of 3 days per week on campus, although this may vary due to the consulting nature of the role and requirements of stakeholders.

About you

Our ideal candidate will have:

  • Experience of working in a large and complex environment
  • A professional qualification (degree level or equivalent) in a Human Resource, Occupational/Organisational Psychology or Health and Wellbeing related subject area. Alternatively, you will have a broad-based business qualification supported by practical experience in a significant range of wellbeing and positive mental health initiatives and programmes, including contributing to guidance and policy in related areas.
  • Experience in coaching, with a suitable qualification and memberships of relevant professional body’s, such as the CIPD/BPS.
  • Experience of using the Health and Safety Executive's management standards to support the development of action plans to continuously drive staff wellbeing forward.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to write reports and present key information to a variety of audiences, including at a strategic level
  • Confidence, credibility and collaboration skills to constructively challenge accepted practices and norms, manage change effectively and express empathy to support people, within boundaries, who may be experiencing difficult or challenging situations
  • Creativity and initiative to solve complex problems, and plan and manage several projects simultaneously.

You’ll be an effective role model and have strategies for effectively managing your own wellbeing, remaining calm and resilient under pressure with the ability to respond to changing circumstances or priorities to deliver a varied and sometimes challenging workload.
